Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia whose history spans a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road along with other commercial routes. Formerly part of the U.S.S.R. Kyrgyzstan declared its independence on August 31, 1991. Since then the people of Kyrgyzstan have struggled with creating a democratic process and with establishing a stable economy. Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest countries in Central Asia, with an economy based largely on agriculture, along with mining and some industries.
