Haiti
Haiti is a country in the Caribbean Sea that includes the western third of the island of Hispaniola along with several smaller islands. Haiti has a rich and unique cultural identity, consisting of a blend of traditional French and African customs, along with contributions from the Spanish and indigenous Taíno cultures. The two official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole. The people of Haiti are almost entirely descended from African slaves who won independence from France in 1804, making them the 2nd country in the Americas (after the United States) to free themself from colonial rule. Over the centuries, however, economic, political, and social difficulties as well as a number of natural disasters have beset Haiti with chronic poverty and other serious problems.
