El Salvador
This small but densely populated country lies in the isthmus of Central America. As the smallest country in continental America, El Salvador is affectionately called Pulgarcito de America (the "Tom Thumb of the Americas"). The people of El Salvador are primarily mestizo, with a mixed indigenous, and European ancestry, with small minorities of indigenous peoples and a few immigrant communities. Despite having little level land, El Salvador was traditionally an agricultural country, heavily dependent upon coffee exports through much of the 20th century. This has caused difficulties in times of crisis.
